Books in the classroom are not enough. Following the book treasury program in classrooms, we felt we need to bring the books into the lives of the children. Learning is mediated through language and Goa like States all over the country are sites of multilinguality.
But English is a subject of the Primary Classroom and to make the connection between reading, learning and books we launched a program in January 2009, called English is Fun. From January to March 2009, over a 12-week period, an English immersion program was conducted daily for primary school children in GPS, Paithona, located in Salvador-do-Mundo panchayat, Bardez, Goa, by a group of seven volunteer teachers. This program was planned through the Village Child Committee of the Panchayat, constituted under the Goa Children’s Act 2005, and was a collaboration of the local governance and voluntary sector.
Phase 2 of English is fun began in June 2009 and will continue upto March 2010. Our objectives are
To continue with the whole language approach to teaching English comprehension and usage to the whole classroom ( Std. 1 – 4 ) over the present academic year. (2009 – 2010) using the multiple intelligences theory to learning.
To include a structured component of basic literacy skills. This means teaching pre-reading and reading skills to children in Std. 1 and 2.
To develop the teaching of basic literacy skills into a structured program that can be replicated across classrooms in primary schools in Goa.
The journey has been exciting, frustrating and rewarding among many other things. Some images of the work are here.
This program is a collaborative exercise between Bookworm, Sethu Centre for Child Development and Spandan Centre , Goa.

We have put away the crazy glue, tinsel
and glitter to mark the end of ‘All things Chirstmas’ – our annual Christmas Crafts Event.
It was quite exciting to have 90 odd children
make crafts that can be gifted to loved ones or
used at home during the Season.
For us at Bookworm, there is something therapeutic about crafting and we share that joy with the
families who sign up for our events. Thank you.
It is also that special looking back time of the year
for us at Bookworm. We have grown yet again in
numbers of both readers, users and books, grown
in school and classroom libraries and grown in
sisterhood with so many more people who have
made the difference to our lives and work.
Thank you all!
I hope to post pictures of our event here and
look forward to 2009 – in celebration and hope.

Below is a synopsis of the Goa Sudharop sponsored workshop “Reading With Kids” conducted for approximately 40 parents at the Hospicio Hospital, Child Development Clinic of the Pediatric Dept, Goa, on 29th August, 2008 from 3-6pm. This workshop was conducted consistent with Goa Sudharop’s 2008 theme “YEAR OF EDUCATION”. The workshop was conducted by Ms. Sujata Noronha.
Thanks to the donors, supporters and well-wishers of Goa Sudharop.

During the workshop, parents were encouraged to think about reasons they believed children do not enjoy reading and reasons why parents would like to encourage children to read. The difference between reading as a skill and reading for pleasure was strongly reinforced to enable parents to understand the emotional link between reading to children, being read to and consequently growing up to enjoy reading.
Parents were handed out a checklist to gauge the print rich environment in their homes to establish the theory that children who are raised in a print rich environment, where reading is fundamentally an enjoyable and valuable activity grow into adults who value reading. Through a Power Point presentation parents were introduced to the 3 stages in reading – 3-5 years, 6-9 years and 10+ readers. What interests and reading styles developmentally captivate these age groups and parents were shown examples of books that could be introduced to children during these ages.
The third section of the workshop involved understanding the main building blocks to reading. Phonological awareness, Phonics, Vocabulary development, Reading Comprehension and Reading Fluency. These areas were explained using activities, reading sessions, games and exercises with parents.
Sujata Noronha (email: bookworm_goa@yahoo.com ) has a Masters in Management and presently pursuing a Masters in Education from the Tata Institute of Social Sciences, Mumbai. She has 7 years of work experience in an NGO in the area of Child Development and Family Guidance, where she co authored a book for teachers in behaviour management in the classroom. She has closely worked on projects which concerned setting up resource rooms for children with learning disabilities and autism.
Sujata has developed a preschool curriculum for the Nirmala Kindergarten at the Nirmala Institute of Education, Altinho Panaji and piloted the new curriculum for a 3 year tenure. Presently, Sujata and Elaine Mendonsa run their own Not for Profit Company called Bookworm The main focus being to teach children to read and love reading.
Through this company, they run the only children’s library in the State of Goa and lend books to schools (14) who do not have library facilities.
They conduct teacher training workshops to help teachers see the link between reading and learning and link children’s literature to curriculum in the classroom. Bookworm publishes its own Magazine called The Bookworm Magazine – to provide children with a graded reading resource that introduces them to children’s literature at good quality and an affordable price. The Magazine is published 5 times /academic year and an annual subscription is Rs. 75.

Dear Bookworm Parents,
As you are aware, Bookworm publishes a magazine for children called The Bookworm Magazine.
We launched the Magazine last year with the scaffolding and impetus given to us by bookworm parent Gulnar. We continue to put this Magazine together, because the response from the children in schools has been very promising.
We have teachers who use the Magazine as a reading tool and medium in their classroom and this among many other things is encouraging.
We priced the Magazine at Rs.10 for last year and have nudged it up to Rs.15 this year to meet rising costs. But the quality ( paper and print) that we believe is essential to good reading material makes it necessary for us to have advertisement support.
Elaine and myself despite our best efforts, are very poor and inadequate at marketing.
We have to acknowledge that we are not able to ’sell’ the space in the Magazine to advertisers, despite the acknowledgement that it is a great product, goes out to 29 schools and counting ! Please help.
We are attaching the Bookworm Magzine Advertisement appeal with this mail and request you to please look at it and or forward it to any person/s who might consider advertising. Elaine and I are happy to follow up with any potential advertiser. We need your support to allow the Magazine to survive.
Many thanks as always
Sujata
